WPP nabs Microsoft star

-

ADVERTISING giant WPP has recruited the most powerful woman in British tech as a board member as it tries to boost its digital credentials.

Cindy Rose, the chief executive of Microsoft UK, will take up her post in April as a non-executive director.

The 53- year- old American ( pictured) has run Microsoft’s business since 2016 and holds British citizenship.

Before joining the US technology giant, she led the consumer division at telecoms firm Vodafone. Her appointment comes as WPP battles competition from internet giants such as Facebook and Google, with advertising shifting online. It also follows disappointing annual results after the FTSE 100 firm posted a hefty drop in profits in January and warned the tough conditions were expected to continue. Roberto Quarta, WPP’s chairman, said: ‘Cindy is one of the most admired and respected figures in the technology industry, and we are delighted to welcome her to the WPP board. Her deep understanding of the role of technology in business transformation will be invaluable.’

Rose said: ‘WPP has set out a bold new vision for its future. I look forward to supporting the team and making a contribution at such an exciting and important moment in the company’s development.’

WPP is in the process of axing 3,500 jobs under plans to slash costs by £275m a year as it looks to turn around its fortunes.

It was rocked by the sudden departure of founder and chief executive Sir Martin Sorrell last year over allegations he paid a prostitute with company expenses. Sorrell denies the claims. WPP shares dipped 0.2pc, or 2p, to 853p.
