‘IF STERLING WAS WHITE HE’D WIN AWARDS’
RIO FERDINAND believes Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling is treated unfairly because he is black. Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand claimed Sterling should be a candidate for top individual awards but his skin colour means he is not being talked about. Sterling is enjoying the best season of his career, with 19 goals in all competitions. ‘If it’s Harry Kane doing that then we’re talking about him being European Player of the Year,’ said Ferdinand. ‘That’s nothing to do with Harry Kane, that’s no slight, but I think that’s the way Raheem’s judged sometimes.’ Asked if Sterling is underestimated because he is English, Ferdinand added: ‘I don’t think that’s the only reason. He’s judged sometimes on the colour of his skin as well.’ Ferdinand praised Sterling for the way he has matured and become a shining example for youngsters. ‘Other young players of all cultures should take a note of what he’s doing. ‘He’s showing if you talk eloquently at the right times, you’ll be respected.’
