Thompson double lifts Millwall
MILLWALL fans love a homegrown, goalscoring hero and Ben Thompson was both on a night when the focus was on Birmingham. Three days after the Midlands club was in the dock for a fan’s assault on Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, it was back to football business. Millwall, whose fans were heavily policed, opened the scoring when Thompson finished off an early breakaway from Lee Gregory’s pass. The pair combined again for Thompson to double the lead. Millwall manager Neil Harris revealed that Sunday’s events had been talked about beforehand. ‘We mentioned it because it has been a tough week,’ he said. ‘I know myself from being at a club with difficult moments. We thought a fast start was important.’ Counterpart Garry Monk added: ‘We are in a sticky position and we need to come out of it. We weren’t good enough.’
