IN justIfIABLY praising the recent achievements of heptathlete Niamh Emerson and expressing hopes for her future that almost certainly will come to fruition, your correspondent looked back to a long line of multi- eventers going back to Denise Lewis.

In fact, it all began in 1972 with (Lady) Mary Peters’s Olympic pentathlon title.
