Vulgar slogans and obscene chants against the PM... yes, it’s the second school ‘climate strike’

- By Eleanor Harding Education Editor

PUPILS chanted vile slogans about the Prime Minister during another day of climate change protests.

In ugly scenes outside Parliament yesterday, truanting children shouted obscenities and demanded the Government ‘do something’ about climate change.

The events were part of a nationwide classroom walkout organised by the group Youth Strike 4 Climate, with demonstrations taking place across the UK.

The protests, which followed a similar walkout last month, brought immediate criticism from Education Secretary Damian Hinds. ‘I want children in school, and I want children learning to be the engineers, the climate scientists, the geographers of the future,’ he said.

Mr Hinds urged children to ‘take some pride’ in what we have achieved on climate change as a country.

He added: ‘I’m delighted those children are taking a keen interest. But I would rather they were in school.’ Outside Parliament, a group of angry-looking teenage girls chanted obscenities about Theresa May and praised Jeremy Corbyn. Geoff Barton, of the Association of School and College Leaders, branded the strikes ‘fruitless’. Scotland Yard said eight people were arrested during the protests – seven for obstructing the highway. A 17-year-old boy was arrested at the parliamentary estate on suspicion of trespass.
