£40million Monet for sale ... expect stacks of interest!

HIS Haystacks series is one of the most recognisab­le in art history.

Now Claude Monet’s Meules, painted in 1890, will go on sale at Sotheby’s in New York for an estimated £40million.

The Impression­ist work, above, will go on public display ahead of the May sale.

It was bought from the artist’s dealer by a Chicago businessma­n in the 1890s and acquired by the current owners at auction for £1.9 million in 1986.

August Uribe, of Sotheby’s, said: ‘It is a privilege to present one of Claude Monet’s defining Impression­ist paintings.’

Some of the proceeds will go to nonprofit institutio­ns in science and music.
