Code of conduct MPs want
DEMANDS in the new report by MPs include:
The Government should force social media companies to accept a ‘duty of care’ for users aged 24 and under.
Social media firms should pay a 0.5 per cent levy on their profits – which should fund research, educational programmes and clearer guidance for the public.
The Government should publish new guidance for young people to avoid excessive social media use.
Health officials should investigate whether the ‘addictive’ nature of social media is sufficient for it to be classed an official disease.
This should take the form of a statutory code of conduct, with Ofcom to act as regulator, to be introduced by the end of October.
