Mind your head: US bombers thunder in

-

THUNDERING across a menacingly dark sky as it came in to land, this formidable US bomber looks like it means business.

It is one of six B-52 Stratofortress aircraft that touched down at RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire, in the largest US deployment of bombers to Britain since the Iraq war.

The B-52s, which can carry nuclear weapons, arrived from Louisiana as Nato prepares for war games off Scotland and in Georgia amid tensions with Russia. It is unclear whether the bombers will be involved, however.

More than 10,000 military personnel, 35 warships, five submarines and 59 aircraft and helicopters from 13 countries will take part in the Scottish exercise, which will include testing responses to the jamming of GPS signals.

US officials said last year that Russia was jamming US military drones over Syria, seriously affecting operations.
