I’ve seen nothing like this for years

- STEVE BULL 306 GOALS IN 561 GAMES FOR WOLVES

BEATING Man United was unbelievable. I’ve not seen scenes like that for an awfully long time at Molineux. It is one of the very top matches I’ve attended for the atmosphere. The crowd were electrifying. It brought me back to the days when we had the play-offs with Crystal Palace in 1997. This time the fans’ noise gave the team that final push.

I was in the Billy Wright Stand doing media work. You needed to be there to experience it. When the first goal went in I thought, ‘Oh my goodness me, we might have a game here’. The place just erupted. All day long, I’d been speaking to people about what might come. Then when it’s happening you’re looking over your shoulder thinking, ‘With these lot behind us…’

The lads deserved the win. They did exactly what they did against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge — didn’t have much possession but kept it tight and frustrated them. Then in the second half United lost the spring in their step, went back into second gear, while we went into top gear. We took the game to them and it was two great finishes to win it.

I had my doubts about Raul Jimenez to begin with. He didn’t seem a natural goalscorer. But he’s come into his own, he is making himself the whole package and he has struck up a brilliant partnership with Diogo Jota. The two of them together remind me of the old days, Derek Dougan and John Richards, myself and Andy Mutch. They each have a great sense of where the other one is on the pitch. It’s beautiful to watch. I had to shoot off for a very good friend’s 50th birthday just before the end, so I was getting texts left, right and centre. ‘Let’s get a coach, let’s get the tickets and hotel sorted.’

I was thinking, ‘Oh my word’. I hadn’t been inundated like that for years. They have a chance of winning the thing. I really feel we can beat Man City. If you’d have said to me at the start of the season we’d be seventh in the league and into the semi-final of the FA Cup, I’d have laughed. I haven’t seen anything like this for many years.
