Visit Jersey ... and sample our cannabis!

-

THEY already come for the chance to see locations filmed in the TV series Bergerac. Now visitors could be flocking to Jersey for a different reason – to sample its cannabis.

A tourism boss has suggested legalising the drug for recreational use to boost tourism. Keith Beecham, the head of Visit Jersey, said a tax on the Class B drug would also increase revenues.

He said the Channel Island should follow Canada and ten US states including Colorado that have relaxed laws relating to the drug.

Although there were ‘ethical and legal’ obstacles, he suggested holding a public consultation, adding: ‘I think it would be short-sighted not to look into it.’

Colorado last year announced it had made about £200million in taxes from £1.17billion in cannabis sales.

Mr Beecham added: ‘That money circulates ... and benefits the broader economy and the services that we all rely on.

‘I am not advocating it as a lifestyle but for people who have cannabis as part of their lifestyle – such as those in Colorado and California – they can enjoy that part of their lifestyle in a different place.’
