SPOONFUL OF MEDICINE

-

INGENIOUS cutlery for those who struggle at meal times. this week: S’up Spoon, from £12.50, sup-products.com

CLAIM: A light plastic spoon with a wide, open end to scoop food — a deeper receptacle for food. The idea came from Scottish inventor Grant Douglas who has cerebral palsy and had difficulty eating soup and cereal. It’s said to be suitable for stroke, Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis sufferers.

EXPERT VERDICT: Claire Rothery, an occupational therapist at reableme.co.uk says: ‘This contained liquids very well; we trialled the spoon with soup and cereal as my daughter Ava, who’s nine, has a hand condition that makes eating difficult. The handle enabled a firm grip and was comfortable to use. There were no spillages, even when we applied a firm shake. The only downside was some of the cereal got stuck inside the spoon. This would be an excellent aid for anyone with co-ordination problems.’
