Blues fear a ban will deter Sarri successor

- By SAMI MOKBEL

CHELSEA fear their impending transfer ban will make their manager’s position less appealing this summer as Maurizio Sarri faces fresh doubts over his future.

Sunday’s loss at Everton has accentuated his precarious position at Stamford Bridge as his side lost further ground in the race to finish in the top four.

Chelsea chiefs are trying to limit the damage caused by a ban imposed by FIFA lasting two transfer windows. World football’s governing body denied the club’s initial appeal, meaning the restrictions will apply from this summer.

The job as Chelsea manager is viewed as one of the most glamorous in Europe. But the club believe the ban will deter candidates to replace Sarri. Their attempts to ensure the club can sign players ahead of next season is designed, in part, to ensure the manager’s job remains attractive.

Disappointing Premier League results have solidified long-standing concerns over Sarri’s suitability from the club’s hierarchy. Sportsmail understands Chelsea have already started identifying replacements for Sarri should they decide, as looks increasingly likely, to relieve the ex-Napoli manager of his duties.

Chelsea would prefer to make a final decision on Sarri’s future at the end of the season and a recent improvement in results — particularly in the Europa League — had raised hopes that the Italian could see out the season.

However, another mutinous showing from supporters — similar to when fans turned on Sarri during their FA Cup loss to Manchester United last month — would push Sarri closer to the axe before the end of the season.

Chelsea are sixth in the Premier League, three points off the top four with eight games left. Even if Sarri can see out the rest of this campaign, doubts remain about his long-term suitability.
