I DON’T
doubt that MP David Lammy’s divisive and frankly racist comments about Stacey Dooley and ‘white saviours’ had a big impact on the drop in donations to Comic Relief this year — down £8 million from 2018.
But, having watched most of it on TV, I can’t help thinking it also had a lot to do with the excruciating smugness of the whole event. It wasn’t the fact that the supposed highlight of the night — reuniting the cast of Four Weddings And A Funeral for a lesbian wedding — was sunk under the weight of its own wokeness.
The trouble with too much political correctness is that it makes it very hard to tell any decent jokes.
And, since Comic Relief is, after all, billed as ‘comedy’, that’s a bit of a problem.
