Turn the volume up on this scandal
‘HE WAS a monster, but he was also a genius’ is something that’s been said of many artists, from Wagner to Picasso.
But no one has been exposed in quite such a disturbing way as Michael Jackson in the recent documentary Leaving Neverland. So it’s understandable that his music should have been dropped by a number of radio stations.
However, sweeping him under the cultural carpet doesn’t make any of it go away. Just as the whole of Hollywood must bear partial responsibility for enabling the behaviour of errant movie bosses, so the music industry — and those who profited from Jackson’s phenomenal success — must be held to account, too.
We should turn up the volume on this scandal, not just turn off Jackson’s music for ever.
