THE attack on two mosques in new Zealand was horrific. the loss of life and the grieving of relatives is heartbreak­ing. the world is in mourning for innocent lives taken.

Social media is saturated with comments full of disbelief and outrage. We are rightly witnessing worldwide solidarity. But selective outrage feeds only self-interest.

It’s telling when one incident is picked up and widely reported on as the tragedy that it is, and yet few paid any attention to attacks on churches in egypt and Pakistan.

after the new Zealand attacks, we comfort the suffering and seek justice for the innocent victims, but this should precipitat­e a much-needed time to listen and talk.

also mourn for north african, nigerian, Middle eastern and asian christians who have faced similar selective slaughter.

there is growing persecutio­n around the world, fuelled by Islamist extremism and repressive government­s, leading the Pope to warn of genocide and campaigner­s to speak of religio-ethnic cleansing.

the far-Right terrorist who killed 50 innocent people publicly announced his hate for Muslims and immigrants. We must stop the ideology of ‘us and them’. It is essential we unite as a common humanity to overcome extremist ideology.
