BROKEN fridges… battered sofas… discarded beer barrels… plastic bottles… food packaging…
You’d expect this disgusting roll- call of waste to be found down the local rubbish dump. Shockingly, as the photographs on Page 14 show, the eyesore is a trendy stretch of the Manchester Ship Canal, in the shadow of the BBC HQ in Salford.
Plastic pollution has also been found at Britain’s secluded beauty spots, including William Wordsworth’s beloved Ullswater.
Surely this is further reason to join the Great British Spring Clean, starting tomorrow. So far, 438,000 volunteers have pledged precious time to fight the tide of litter. Your country needs you!
