‘We’ve had death threats since Mrs May’s speech’
MPs say they are facing attacks and death threats following Theresa May’s speech criticising their indecision on Brexit.
One revealed she was unable to go home to her constituency this weekend, while another blamed the Prime Minister after he was attacked in the street.
Anna Soubry – who quit the Conservatives to join The Independent Group last month – said she was facing ‘very serious death threats, especially when people know your home address’.
She told reporters: ‘I can’t go home this weekend. I am not safe. I’m not alone in this – Chuka [Umunna] has had death threats, so many of us have – but this is the reality of it. We are tired of being called traitors. When people use that language, the next thing is I get an email that says: “Traitors get beheaded, that’s what should happen to you”.’
A Labour MP also blamed Mrs May after claiming he was assaulted in the street.
Lloyd Russell-Moyle, MP for Brighton Kemptown, wrote on Twitter: ‘I was out today with ITV News. A man started shouting... saying MPs are traitors.
‘He tried to assault me, grabbed and bent my glasses... three grown men had to prise him off me. @theresa_may has whipped up fear and division.’
On Wednesday night Mrs May gave a speech criticising MPs for playing ‘political games’ over her Brexit deal.
