Springing into action
GRABBING litter-pickers, bin bags and high-vis jackets, the Mail’s magnificent readers were turning out today to get the Great British Spring Clean underway. From Land’s End to John O’Groats, public-spirited people of all ages will attend 5,000 events on day one of the month-long campaign. As a warm up, dancers in Brighton will (to paraphrase Winston Churchill), fight the rubbish on the beaches. Countrywide, 750 schools will take part.
So far, 460,000 volunteers have enlisted to remove the litter blighting towns, countryside and waterways.
As politicians squabble over Brexit, it is a testimony to civic pride that so many give up their valuable time to help create a cleaner planet for future generations.
