Drug-smuggling tip... from police
THE pretty Dorset seaside town of Lyme regis would be the perfect place to smuggle drugs – according to a police watchdog.
Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens made the odd comments at a public meeting.
Miss Mountstevens said in Bristol: ‘our colleagues at the border agencies do phenomenal work … But if you look at all the ports that are around, we’re an island. So if I was a drug dealer, I probably wouldn’t go to Dover. I would go down to Lyme regis or somewhere like that.’
In response, the clerk for Lyme regis Town Council, John Wright, said: ‘It is unfortunate the police and crime commissioner … specifically named Lyme regis, particularly when there is no known evidence of drug smuggling into Lyme regis.’
Miss Mountstevens has since apologised.
