Petition to revoke Article 50 is signed by over 2million

-

A PETITION to cancel Brexit crashed the Parliament website yesterday after two million signed it.

The official petitions site could not cope with the traffic from people logging on to register their support for calls to revoke Article 50.

Commons Leader Andrea Leadsom dismissed the petition, pointing out it was not on the same scale as the referendum. ‘Should it reach 17.4million, I am sure there will be a very clear case for taking action,’ she said.

Last night the petition had just over 2million signatures – well above the 100,000 threshold that means it will be considered for debate by MPs.

Yesterday’s rate of signatures was the highest the site has ever had, officials said. At one point, nearly 2,000 were signing up every minute. The petition reads: ‘The Government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is “the will of the people”. We need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now, for remaining in the EU.’

Downing Street said that the PM ‘has said many times she will not countenance revoking Article 50’.
