was identified as leader of the IRA in Birmingham – responsibl­e for selecting the targets. Known as ‘Belfast Jimmy’, McLoughlin died in 201 and was given a paramilita­ry-style funeral. JAMES FRANCIS GAVIN helped to plant the bombs. The British Army deserter was jailed for a year for possessing explosives. He was later jailed for the murder of a fellow Republican. He died in 2002.

MICK MURRAY made the bombs – and a botched warning phonecall. He was tried with the Birmingham Six and jailed for nine years for conspiracy to cause explosions. An IRA member until his death in 1999.

MICHAEL HAYES is in his 70s and living in Dublin. He was arrested but released due to a lack of evidence. In 2017, above, he denied being directly involved but took ‘collective responsibi­lity’.
