Yorkshire Tour chief’s shame

-

SIR GARY VERITY, the man who brought the Tour de France to Britain in 2014, resigned in disgrace as chief executive of Welcome To Yorkshire last night after a probe into his expenses. The organisation said Verity — formerly a candidate to be chief executive of the Premier League — had stepped down due to ill health, but added ‘concerns have been raised about his behaviour towards staff and his expenses’. The statement added: ‘The board has concluded that Sir Gary made errors of judgment regarding his expenses at a very difficult time for him and his family.’ The 54-year-old said: ‘I have always tried to set the highest standards of personal performance and leadership. When, on occasions, I have fallen short, I apologise. My health is now my priority. I ask for time and space to heal.’ Sir Gary had held the role since October 2008, but rose to prominence when he brought the world’s biggest cycling race to his home region in 2014. Verity has subsequently been the driving force behind its legacy event, the Tour de Yorkshire. Welcome to Yorkshire said Verity had ‘agreed to reimburse monies owed’.
