Eichmann spymaster dies at 92

-

THE former Israeli spy who led the audacious capture of Nazi Adolf Eichmann has died at 92.

Rafi Eitan, who died on Saturday at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, commanded an eight-man team that kidnapped Eichmann, the mastermind of the Nazis’ Final Solution, from his hiding place in Argentina.

Eichmann was drugged and spirited secretly out of South America by plane to Israel, where he was tried and hanged in 1962.

Born on a kibbutz in British-ruled Palestine in November 1926, Eitan joined the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad in the Fifties and rose to become operations chief.

Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu said: ‘Rafi was one of the heroes of Israel’s intelligence service in countless acts for Israel’s security.’
