Sammi, my spoilt pet squirrel

-

WhY are people biased against grey squirrels (Letters)? They may not be a native species, but other introduced animals such as muntjac deer and rabbits do a great deal of damage to crops, but are not reviled in the same way. Do we have to hate an animal that does not appear to do half the damage it is blamed for? When one of our dogs found a baby squirrel at the base of a tree, it was so young that it could barely walk, let alone climb a tree. There was no mother to be seen and buzzards were circling overhead, so we took her home. Once domesticated, we were advised not to release her, and it was difficult finding a vet to care for a squirrel, but we managed. Sammi Squig, as we called her, lived with us happily for several years. It loved to play with our border collie Shep. The dog would chase Sammi into the kitchen and then come tearing back into the kitchen, pursued by the squirrel. I. CLARK, Coventry. SQUIRReLS in my garden do rummage through my plant pots and flowerbeds, digging up bulbs to eat, but I accept they have to find their own food. I enjoy watching them, even though they strip the trees of their bark. Squirrels should not be harmed: we are all God’s creatures put on this earth to live as best we can. It would be a sad place without wildlife. C. BALESoN, Stockport, Gtr Manchester.
