When it comes to the crunch, Britain’s at war … over crisps!

VENTING online, unhappy with the outcome and calling for a second vote – you’d be forgiven for thinking the argument was Brexit-related.

But it is a row over crisps which has left a bitter taste in some people’s mouths.

Britain’s Favourite Crisps, which aired on Channel 5 on Sunday night, sparked a frenzy on social media with the result of its poll branded ‘a national disgrace’ and an ‘utter travesty’.

A two-hour investigation saw different snacks ranked, with a final pyramid placing the three most popular – Pringles, Walkers and Doritos – in the ‘God Tier’.

McCoy’s, Kettle Chips, Tyrrells, Walkers Sensations, Hula Hoops, Monster Munch, Quavers, Wotsits and Chipsticks were all middling, while the lowest rung was made up of Mini Cheddars, Salt ’n’ Shake, Nik Naks and Squares. Many pedantic viewers were quick to point out that some, such as Mini Cheddars, are not technically crisps.

One incensed Twitter user wrote: ‘What sort of monster votes Pringles or Doritos as their favourite crisps,’ while another said: ‘This pyramid infuriates me.’ And one viewer joked that they had called Ofcom to complain. Meanwhile, another tweeted: ‘I want a second referendum on Britain’s favourite crisps. A national disgrace.’

A devoted fan calling themselves The Crisp Connoisseur condemned the result, commenting: ‘No French Fries. No Discos. No Skips. No Frazzles. No Space Raiders. No integrity.’ And another said: ‘I’ve lost faith in the British public after this travesty.’

Channel 5 faced a similar fallout after it announced the chocolate digestive as Britain’s favourite biscuit in 2017.
