A nod and a wink

-

TV REVIEWER Christopher Stevens describes the BBC series Fleabag as a new kind of comedy. It is an excellent programme, but having a leading character talking directly to camera is not new.

Miranda Hart often threw a knowing glance or nod to her audience in her self- titled comedy show, but she never claimed that this was her innovation. She gave the credit to her comedy heroes Morecambe and Wise.

And let’s not forget Ian Richardson as scheming Francis Urquhart in the political thriller House Of Cards, with his winks to camera and his sly aside: ‘You might very well think that. I couldn’t possibly comment.’
