UK’s time zone confusion

THE European Parliament yesterday voted to advance plans for scrapping twiceyearly clock changes.

The proposal could create an extra headache for Britain after Brexit if it becomes law in 2021. But Britain may still be in a transition period in 2021 if it reaches a Brexit deal, meaning it would have to adopt the law under the terms of Theresa May’s Withdrawal Agreement.

If the backstop has kicked in, it has the potential to create a ‘time border’ between Northern Ireland, who would have to adopt the EU rules, and mainland Britain. Were Northern Ireland to continue changing its clocks with the UK, it could operate in a different time zone to the Republic.
