YOU HAVE YOUR SAY

£35bn REASONS TO SAY HAPPY 20th BIRTHDAY TO THE ISA!

-

EVERY week, Money Mail receives hundreds of your letters and emails. Here are some from our article about Isas, as the savings accounts celebrate their 20th birthday. . . I REMEMBER when you used to get a decent interest rate on an Isa. Nowadays, the rates are so low on a five-figure sum that you get hardly anything back. It wouldn’t even cover a bad night out. O. D., Elsenham, Essex. THE interest on money you put into an Isa will still be tax free when rates finally return to ‘normal’. Unfortunately, by the time that happens, most of us prudent savers will probably be pushing up daisies. S. P., by email. WHILE the personal allowance is £20,000, I could only afford to put £11,000 into my Isa. I’ve hardly received anything back. It probably cost me more in bus fares when I was setting it up than I got back. D. S., by email. AN ISA wrapper is probably the best investment tool on the planet for the average saver. Cash Isas aren’t great, but stocksand-shares Isas can incorporate funds across every industry you could think of. R. W., London. I’VE had an Isa ever since they were introduced in 1999. I sometimes wonder what is the point and feel I should spend the money instead. Then I end up chickening out and forgetting about it for another few months. S. O., Durham. I’VE got a stocks-and-shares Isa. Mine is tracking the UK and U.S. indices and selected income and growth stocks. If you put in a bit of time and effort, you can make a stocks-and-shares Isa work for you. C. S., Northampton. I CAN’T afford to save at all at the moment. My council tax, petrol, food, water, gas bills and train fares have all gone up. All of these rises are above my 1 pc pay increase. I.
