Pupils ‘raped on Ghana trip’
TWO men have been charged with raping British schoolgirls and their teacher at gunpoint on a trip to Ghana.
The teenage pupils, who were volunteering with underprivileged children, were attacked after a gang broke into their accommodation. They had been in the country for only 24 hours.
A security guard was reported to have been shot while trying to stop the horrific attack last December. He survived but suffered serious injuries. The girls’ possessions were also stolen.
Daniel Akpan, 29, a Nigerian citizen, and Ishmael Akyene, 34, from Ghana, are accused of rape and robbery.
Both men were remanded in custody, with Ghanaian police still seeking a third alleged attacker.
British police said the victims were receiving specialist support.
