- SEEK BUT YE SHALL NOT FIND

The builders were finished at last; They asked me to get out some cash, So I hurried to catch the bank — It was late and I had to dash. I circled the bank several times, There wasn’t one space left to park, So I stopped on a yellow line: I had to be back before dark. The bank looked strangely quiet And I saw that the doors were closed, Then I caught sight of the notice — Shut for good — what problems that posed! Back to my car which had a ticket Things were going from bad to worse, And what’s more, I needed some petrol — By now I was feeling quite terse. I drove to the nearest garage But the forecourt for once was bare, The whole place was now closed for good — There was no petrol there. I was seething with frustration, This was not what I had planned, When two hooded youths on mopeds Snatched my phone right from my hand. In fury I drove to the police station To report the cowardly crime, The blue light was off — the doors were sealed, It had been closed for quite some time. I needed a drink to calm me down And, passing by The Queen’s Head, I drove into the car park to find A large block of flats there instead. This really was the last straw. I find life now is getting too tough. No cash, no petrol, no police. But no booze? Enough is ENOUGH! Janet Byrne, Harrow, Middlesex.
