Killing Eve up for 14 awards … after Bafta bends the rules
IT is the sexually-charged thriller that has captivated audiences with its tale of two female foes intent on both seducing and assassinating each other.
And yesterday BBC drama Killing Eve swept the board in the Bafta nominations, receiving 14.
Stars Jodie Comer, who plays Villanelle, and Sandra Oh, who plays Eve, are both nominated for the leading actress award, while the programme is also up for best drama series and supporting actress.
But Bafta bosses bent the rules for the BBC3 programme, which is not eligible for five of its nominations under the usual entry criteria which state that a programme must have had a ‘worldwide premiere transmission in the UK’. Killing Eve premiered in the US six months before it aired on the BBC.
Bafta said it had deemed the show eligible because of the ‘significant creative contribution from key talent on and off screen residing in the UK’.
The BBC’s mini-series about the trial of politician Jeremy Thorpe, A Very English Scandal, has 12 nominations, including best actor for Hugh Grant.
Hit BBC1 political thriller Bodyguard has five nominations including best drama series and leading actress for Keeley Hawes. The awards will take place in London on May 12.
