Lethal toxins still at Grenfell site
CHEMICALS linked to cancer and asthma have been found in soil and debris up to three-quarters of a mile from the Grenfell Tower site, it emerged yesterday.
People living near the burnt-out tower have complained of health problems such as vomiting and coughing up blood.
An independent study launched after the 2017 fire in west London which killed 72 found toxin levels were ‘many times higher than normal’. Two pollutants – polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and benzene – were up to 160 times higher.
Study leader Professor Anna Stec, of the University of Central Lancashire, said: ‘There is an increased risk of health problems from asthma to cancer.’
A Government spokesman said it took the findings ‘extremely seriously’.
