Here we go again!

The German lady in front of me at the Novello Theatre may have been thinking of Money, Money, Money when she tried to record Mamma Mia! with her phone.

But it was a sign that, after 20 years, people still dig the dancing queens, platforms and Abba songs.

The Novello was packed — quite something for a Wednesday night. My mind flashed back to seeing it for the first time. At the first Saturday preview, people were whispering that it wouldn’t be around very long. Wrong!

The smartest thing producer Judy Craymer did was hire Catherine Johnson to write it, and Phyllida Lloyd to direct.

Lloyd insisted on a similarly strong script when she directed the Tina Turner musical at the Aldwych next door.
