Giles: You’ll not see our boys doing a Mankad!

-

ASHLEY GILES has condemned the controversial ‘Mankad’ dismissal of Jos Buttler in the Indian Premier League and has forbidden England seeking revenge if they meet India in this summer’s World Cup. Speaking exclusively to Sportsmail in a wide-ranging interview, the new managing director of England men’s cricket said: ‘If we are going to inspire future generations you don’t want to see that between two world-class cricketers. It was just unnecessary. We need to stick to our values and play cricket our way, so we don’t need to do things like that.’ Ashwin’s actions in the IPL on Monday — running out Buttler at the non-striker’s end by aborting his run-up even though Buttler was barely backing up — have divided opinion. It has led to an abrupt U-turn from lawmakers MCC who originally defended Ashwin but then said on Wednesday his actions were ‘not in the spirit of the game’. ‘What is the spirit of cricket?’, asked Giles. ‘You can interpret it in many ways but I don’t think this incident was a good look for the game. Over the last 12 to 18 months we have started building some momentum in the way England play the game and we need to keep that up. ‘If part of our job is to inspire young cricketers around the country then we need to make role models and heroes of our players and they’re doing that with the way they’re playing, particularly in white-ball cricket. ‘But the respect bit is crucial. You can win but without respect there’s nothing underneath. Winning with respect is where we want to be.’
