Pep: We’re going for all four

- By JACK GAUGHAN

PEP GUARDIOLA has promised that Manchester City are in perfect shape for an historic Quadruple. The City manager used a team meeting to tell his players that the run-in, starting at Fulham today, is something they must embrace. Guardiola has never spoken so openly about the prospect of becoming the first British team since Celtic in 1967 to win all four major trophies but addressed the hype head-on yesterday. The 48-year-old (right), who once clinched six trophies in 12 months at Barcelona, believes his team are ready for the challenge. ‘I think they are fresh mentally and in the legs and we are going to try,’ Guardiola said. ‘Now we are playing for the cake. It’s an incredible experience. ‘I’m looking forward to it. It makes good sense to go out there thinking, “If we don’t win we are not going to win the competition”. Play with this kind of pressure. ‘If we get a bad game or a bad result and lose then how do we react? That’s what I’m curious about. The Treble has happened just once with Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United, nobody (in English football) has won four.’ Only Chelsea under Jose Mourinho in 2007 and Ferguson’s United in 2009 were chasing a Quadruple at this stage of a season. That Ferguson side were the last to retain a Premier League title. Guardiola added: ‘We know it’s 10 years since it happened, we’ve heard from the beginning how difficult it is. We’ve spoken about that. There is no time for regrets. We put everything we have into every single game, every single minute, every competition to see how far we get. ‘My experience is not to look at the neighbour (Liverpool) too much because it’s a huge mistake. ‘They’re in the Champions League as well but when you look at them you can be distracted, then maybe you are the first to drop points.’ Guardiola admitted he has a selection headache given all of his big-hitters are back from injuries. One of his toughest decisions lies in attack, with Leroy Sane and Riyad Mahrez battling it out with Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva. ‘They are playing quite well but the problem is Raheem and Bernardo are playing outstanding,’ he said. ‘They are incredible, not just in this last period but the whole season.’
