Should new cars be fitted with speed limiters?

-

The EU is dictating the way we can drive by putting speed limiters on new cars from 2022 (Mail). There will be so many more cars on the roads by then that we will be lucky even to get to the speed limit. I have driven on French main roads, which are dual carriageways. Imagine two lorries with limiters and one trying to overtake. Unless one gives way, there would be a blockade. We are told the speed limiter can be over-ridden by pushing your right foot to the floor, but surely this sudden surge of power could be dangerous. IAN VERDON, Watford, Herts.

WHY are people complaining about speed limiters in cars when these have been in commercial vehicles for years, along with tracking devices? Limiters will causes long queues of vehicles unable to pass because they will all be limited to the same speed. JOHN EBORALL, address supplied.

STEPHEN GLOVER expressed his irritation at the interference of intelligent speed control devices due to be fitted to cars from 2022 (Mail). I suspect car manufacturers feel the same. I can’t see too many owners of high-end performance cars trading in their 2021 model for a new, slower one in 2022. PHILIP BASSETT, Bracknell, Berks.

IT’S one thing for new cars to make up their own minds to slow down. What about the millions of older vehicles that will still be on the road in 2022? Will we see a rise in accidents caused by being rammed from behind? JIM TRICKETT, Pontefract, W. Yorks.

INSTEAD of speed limiters, why not limit the size of car engines? Smaller ones don’t just go slower, they use less fuel and don’t cause as much pollution. PAUL BRAZIER, Wotton-under-Edge, Glos.

IF ALL new vehicles are to be fitted

with speed limiters, that’s curtains for BMWs. Or will they be exempt? MICK WHEELER, Writtle, Essex.

I’M Surprised the Government is going along with the EU idea of speed limiters in cars. Surely the revenue from speed cameras will diminish significantly. Local authorities will feel the pinch to their income if these cash cows stop paying out. The Government will have to dream up another swingeing tax on the hard-pressed motorist. CHRIS PRITCHETT, Hucknall, Notts.

HAVE you driven on a motorway where the speed limit is limited to 50 mph? The build-up of traffic, particularly HGVs in the slow lane, is frightening, particularly when you try to turn off at a junction. STEPHEN DAWSON, Ruabon, Wrexham.

SPEED limiters in cars are nothing new. I’ve had one for years — my wife. JOHN LIDDLE, Thetford, Norfolk.
