NORRIS IS NO SOFT TOUCH

- JONATHAN McEVOY

LANDO NORRIS was in search of a soft drink last night after the first points of his Formula One career. Aged 19, the McLaren driver, from Somerset, finished sixth and claimed eight points in only his second race — the team’s best result since last season’s opening round. Norris pulled off a number of overtaking moves on his way through the field, including on 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen, 20 years his senior. Asked if he would allow himself a brief celebration, Norris said: ‘Yes, but I will not be drinking. I am staying away from that stuff. This is my chance to do well in Formula One and I don’t want to do anything stupid to spoil it. Things can happen when you have too much to drink. I’m spending the next week in Bahrain testing but will allow myself half a day off to sunbathe.’ McLaren might have had more points but Carlos Sainz retired after being hit by Max Verstappen.
