DWIGHT LOOKS A LEADING LIGHT

- JACK GAUGHAN at Turf Moor

The country is talking about Chelsea’s Callum hudson-Odoi while Dwight McNeil slips under the radar. McNeil is a direct winger, possessing a trick and delivery that can bamboozle far better defences than the one Wolves set out. he is Burnley’s most productive outlet. The 19-year-old was the architect of his side’s quick opener, before slaloming beyond defenders to scorch home the winner towards full-time, sealing a result that went some way to securing Burnley’s Premier League status. Ryan Sessegnon is the only teenager to have contributed to as many goals as McNeil’s seven this season, yet neither have an england senior call-up. Both are excelling in the shadows. Gareth Southgate has spotted McNeil’s potential, inviting him to train with england over the international break. ‘We were still prepping for the Under 20 Poland game which was two days away at the time and we were having breakfast,’ McNeil said. ‘Our manager Paul Simpson came over and said, “You’ll have breakfast and then be training with the seniors”. I thought I did really well, it was a good new experience. ‘I wasn’t nervous. You just have to take it like you’re training with the lads and that is what I did. I was up against Kyle Walker and it was good to learn from him. ‘It helped that Tarks (James Tarkowski) and heats (Tom heaton) were in there. It was a good learning curve. All the lads were really welcoming and it made it easier. ‘Gareth just said before the training session to enjoy it and to express myself and afterwards it was a real confidence-booster when he said I did really well.’ Wolves were off colour at Turf Moor, having much of the ball but without threatening. Manchester United lie in wait tomorrow but some eyes were glancing towards Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final

against Watford. One way or another, full-back Matt Doherty wants European football next season. ‘I don’t see why we can’t get Europe,’ he said. ‘We want to finish strongly and we want to win the Fa Cup.’
