Not all herbs grow best in Mediterran­ean conditions. Garlic, chives, basil, parsley, lovage, mint, angelica and sorrel are among those that thrive in rich soils — so plan a herb garden with separate sections or beds, then the soil can be prepared accordingl­y. Good drainage is vital. Plenty of compost will help the soil structure as well as adding nutrients, but I always add extra horticultu­ral grit before planting any herbs. Here are a few herbs that can be successful­ly grown largely in shade, though they will all do much better if given at least three hours sunshine a day...
