LEMUR YOGA!

Forget goats, llamas and the downward dog – if you want inner peace, why not try...

- By Eleanor Hayward

IT used to be the case that you came to a yoga class armed with a mat and sought inner peace with poses such as downward-facing dog and the Lotus position.

Then along came baby goats, llamas and alpacas to join in the fun. Now lemurs want a piece of the action. Guests at a luxury spa in the Lake District are being offered ‘Lemoga’ classes with ten animals from a neighbouring wildlife park.

The lemurs – an endangered species from Madagascar – naturally copy yoga enthusiasts, holding poses like the Lotus, which is said to help restore spiritual balance.

Armathwaite Hall Hotel in Keswick is putting on the classes at Lake District Wildlife Park to ‘relieve the symptoms of city living’. The sessions will be held in the lemur enclosure from next month as part of a two-day ‘Lemoga Spa Break’, costing £495 for two people.

Richard Robinson, of the park, said the animals have a natural gift for yoga and their playful nature helps people to unwind. He said: ‘We have ten lemurs aged two to 20 and they have taken to yoga straight away. They love interacting with people.

‘They actually sit in a yoga pose naturally. As soon as a bit of sun comes out they cross their legs and hold up their arms.’ Hotel owner Carolyn Graves said: ‘Lemoga offers guests the chance to feel at one with nature while joining the lemurs’ playtime.’
