Iran cyber blitz hits Post Office

-

IRAN is behind a wave of cyber-attacks on key elements of UK infrastructure such as the Post Office, spies believe.

The postal service and local government networks were hit in a major assault just before Christmas, it was reported last night. Private sector companies, including banks, were also allegedly compromised in what was described as an ‘ongoing’ campaign.

Analysis by cyber security experts in California concluded that a group connected to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard was responsible. They said the group was also behind the attack on the parliamentary network in 2017.

Britain’s relationship with Iran has plummeted since it imprisoned UKIranian citizen Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe in 2016 for alleged spying. The National Cyber Security Centre said it was ‘aware of a cyber incident affecting some UK organisations in late 2018’. A spokesman stressed it was ‘working with victims and advising on mitigation measures’.
