Last night, at a glittering Windsor Castle event, she paid tribute to Britain’s army of volunteers – including those who have enlisted as NHS helpers to comfort the sick.

When we asked readers at Christmas to join the Hospital Helpforce, more than 33,000 signed up to make a world of difference to patients’ lives. Every single one deserves the greatest praise imaginable.
