Postie’s narrow escape from Italian Job-style cliffhanger

HE was only supposed to deliver the mail…

But this Parcelforce driver seemed to have re- enacted the closing cliffhanger scene of The Italian Job when his van was spotted apparently dangling a few feet from a 200ft drop into the sea.

The heart-stopping moment was captured by a walker and his wife as they wandered along a coastal path in Tintagel, Cornwall.

The man, who did not want to be named, said they were returning home when they found the van hanging off the cliff’s edge and the driver lying on the grass. He said: ‘We thought he was in shock but he was lying back calling for a tow... We see some really unusual things but this was perhaps the most unusual. Had he gone for perhaps another metre the situation could have been very different; he would have gone down over a cliff about 200ft.’

A Parcelforce Worldwide spokesman said: ‘At no stage was our driver at risk in this incident. The van was some distance from the cliff edge and there is a grass verge in front of the vehicle where the driver was able to exit in safety with no injuries.’

They added: ‘The van was recovered. An investigation has been commenced to find out what happened.’
