Age discrimination
I HAVE every sympathy for the reader who is shocked she can’t get a job because she is in her 50s (Letters). It was a reminder of the hell I went through trying to find work at the age of 55.
Discrimination against the over-50s is rife. In this PC age, there are laws to protect everyone — except for mature job applicants.
I was interviewed in open-plan offices where others could hear my details, was sneered at for dressing smartly and had to endure questions such as why did I think I had been selected for redundancy.
It took two years until a kind man said: ‘Let’s give it a go.’ I’ve now been happily employed with that company for 12 years.
The Government needs to bring in job quotas for mature people.
