Life-saving test
I WAS sad to read about the number of women not having smear tests due to fear and embarrassment (Mail).
I have not had a smear test for the past five years nor do I need to have one again.
Lucky me? No. Due to a diagnosis of ovarian cancer in 2014, I underwent a hysterectomy and six rounds of chemo.
I had visited my GP on another matter and only at the last minute of the consultation did I think to mention the slightly uncomfortable feeling in my lower abdomen.
The next few weeks sent me and my family into a tailspin. But, due to the excellent care of my doctor, consultant, surgeon and the rest of the NHS staff involved in my treatment and subsequent recovery, I am still here.
There is no test available for ovarian cancer, but there is one for cervical cancer, so please, ladies, make use of it. A little embarrassment and a minute or two of mild discomfort is a small price to pay.
