BRIDGE MASTERCLASS

- PETER DONOVAN

YOU don’t like it and you’re not happy — in fact, it’s become the sort of hand on which you wish you hadn’t opened at all.

But anything you do may make matters worse. At least at the moment you’re not doubled, so if partner goes down in 2NT it will cost only 50 points a trick.

The only sensible thing to do is to pass. At least you have got all you promised from your bidding, even if it’s minimum, and your partner has made his two-bid knowing that you may have no more than you have shown.

The moral of this hand is that you should never try to get out of a contract you don’t like unless you have some expectation that your alternative will be better.
