Rooney sees red... but it needed VAR

-

THIS is the moment Wayne Rooney earned a straight red card for a wild, studs-up lunge at Los Angeles FC forward Diego Rossi. Amazingly, referee Robert Sibiga only booked the former Manchester United and England captain at first. It needed VAR to confirm Rooney’s first sending-off in Major League Soccer. DC United were losing 3-0 at the time. Rossi, who scored LA’s second and third goals, completed his hat-trick and a 4-0 win in the 76th minute after Rooney had received the seventh red card of his career and his first since September 2014. ‘I have no arguments,’ said the 33-year-old. ‘It wasn’t malicious, I didn’t try to hurt him. But obviously I caught him. I was expecting (a red card) when the referee gave me the yellow. It’s the right call.’ Rooney will miss tomorrow’s game with Montreal Impact.
