Ofcom probes Jon Snow over ‘so many white people’ remark on C4
JON Snow’s controversial jibe that he had ‘never seen so many white people in one place’ is being investigated by Ofcom.
The presenter’s remarks, made at a pro-Brexit rally in London, led to 2,644 complaints being sent in to the media watchdog.
Ofcom yesterday revealed it would look into whether his comments breached its rules on ‘offensive content’. Snow, 1, was signing off his Channel 4 News bulletin on March 29 – the day the UK was meant to leave the EU – when he said: ‘It’s been the most extraordinary day. A day which has seen... I’ve never seen so many white people in one place.’
Outraged viewers accused him of bias, noting he had not made observations about the ethnic make-up of the crowd at the antiBrexit protest a few days earlier. Channel 4 later apologised.
Ofcom will also investigate remarks made by Nigel Farage in the aftermath. On his LBC show, he said Snow ‘should be attacked without a doubt’ – but later clarified he meant verbally.
