... but at least your train’s not on fire

COMMUTING on one of Britain’s most unreliable train services can be a daily battle.

But even Southern passengers were not prepared for what happened during yesterday morning’s rush hour.

They were forced to disembark through thick smoke after their packed train caught fire at London Bridge station.

The train from Caterham had just arrived when its brakes went up in flames.

The fire shut down at least three platforms and commuters were hit with lengthy delays. A witness said: ‘London Bridge could have ended up burning down. People were stepping out of the train and into plumes of thick smoke.’

Two fire engines and an aerial ladder were sent to the station after the blaze broke out at 8.41am.

A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said there were no reported injuries and station staff isolated the power on three tracks to allow crews, who quickly put out the fire, access to the track.
