WOMEN’S LIB

-

Now, I am nearly 90, And, of course, I’m ‘Out the Ark’, The gap between my views, and those Of Women’s Lib is stark! I loved the mild flirtatiousness, Adored the chivalry, Was glad to know that men were strong, Protective towards me. When men would hold a door for me I through that door would glide, And thank them most politely, Causing joy on either side. I did not rush to go to court, If workmen stared at me, Or if, quite inadvertently, A man should touch my knee. Oh, Women’s Lib, for womankind Some sterling work you’ve done, And over rank injustices The victory you’ve won. But did you have to go so far? The pendulum, it seems, Has swung right past the happy mean, And gone to the extremes. Why did you have to try so hard All chivalry to kill? And every manly courtesy To meet with icy chill? The genuinely decent man (Of whom there’s quite a few) Now feels himself inhibited; Uncertain what to do. He dare not pay a compliment, Stretch out a friendly arm, Enjoy light-hearted bantering, With no intent to harm. When common sense has fled the field It’s time to draw the line — And bring back some respect for what Is truly masculine. Mrs A. L. Burns, Edinburgh.
